Last year I wrote this post and thought as the year dwindles down that I would check back in on my "goals". Comments in red were made today, 12/30/08, the rest was written in January.
One habit you'd like to break totally: My foul mouth and critical nature
Yeah, not broken yet. Shhhh!
One person you'd like to get to know better: You know, as stupid as it sounds…I’m all good. I suppose if I met someone new I would be okay getting to know them and there are a few close friends that I suppose I could be closer to, but otherwise…I’m good. *smiling*
Yeah, still good with this one.
One random act of kindness that you'd like to make a habit this year: I’d like to send more thank you and happy notes to people. I would love it even more if these were all handmade thank-you notes but I’m not going to cross my fingers of anything about that. :-D
I did send a few thank you and happy notes this year, but sadly only a couple were handmade. There is seriously not enough time in the day.
Something that you'd like to own by the end of 2008: a large format printer/scanner, a video camera, a hd tv (have one…we just don’t own it yet!)
Nah...none of this. Although, I still have the same awesome TV though.
Something that you'd like to get rid of by the end of 2008: emotional baggage
Better living through chemistry. Sometimes the baggage disappears.
One change you'd like to see in your life in 2008: happiness
Two thumbs up!
One thing you'd like to memorize in 2008: Colossians 3
*note to self* Add to next year's list.
Something that you'd like to improve on: I’d like to improve my scrapbooking skills, continue studying piano and read more.
I did read a couple of books this year! I know...you are seriously impressed, right?
Something you'd like to learn in 2008: sign language, digital scrapbooking, how to bake, how to make things with wood, how to use PhotoShop, to read minds
Okay sign language=no, digital scrapbooking=a tiny bit, how to bake=uhm no..still burning or undercooking things, making things with wood=no, but I could only think of a naughty response to this one so I'm just gonna say...no, how to use PhotoShop=nope no time, reading minds=i don't think so, well...unless you are thinking about football right now.
Something you're looking forward to this year: my son turns 9 (holy cow!) and Jas and I will celebrate 13 years of wedded bliss.
Wow! Time flies. Joey is 9 and I am still married. All good.
One thing you're going to make sure does NOT happen in 2008: I will not go negative in the bank. Hey! I think it only happened a couple of times! That's better, right?
Will you try to eat healthier?: Always.
and I totally did! Really! Whole wheat bread and pasta, more veggies and fruits, light cheese, diet soda...omg. I am so healthy!
Will you take up some form of exercise?: Not a new form, but I’ll do the old ones more.
I got on the elliptical machine. I still hate it, but I can do it! woot woot!
Will you try to improve your financial situation?: Of course. I would love to be able to rearrange things so that I can work part time or something.
Still dreaming. *sigh*
Will there be any lifelong goals you'll try to accomplish?: I hope to knock several things off my life list.
Holy crap...I don't know that I did any of that. *sigh*
Will you move to a new place?: I will have the opportunity, but I don’t think I’ll be moving.
and I didn't
What new things will you try for fun and adventure?: I want to take one of those strip aerobics classes, go on a FOR REAL vacation and perhaps submit some of my scrapbook layouts to some magazines.
*sigh* I am so disappointed. Doing this list sucks.
Will you try a new look?: Maybe. I’m open to that right now
I got a screwed up new hair cut that makes me look like Joe Dirt.
Will you try to eat something you've never had before?: Always. New=good.
I tried several new foods this year!
Will you be getting any tattoo's?: yes. Yeah...not so much.
Will you be getting any piercings: probably not. I may get my top earring wholes re-pierced, but don’t know.
Didn't do that. Thought about piercing my nipples, but the healing time on that is just crazy!
Will you try a new hairstyle or color?: Maybe Didn't I answer this already?
Will there be any charities you'll be active in?: I’m not sure.
Does supporting my Mom count?
Other stuff I said:
Top 5 Places to go in 08: Florida, Grand Canyon, Canada, California, sleep
Top 5 Things to do in 08: Help Jason with church, play more with Joey, make time for scrapbooking, watch several tv series that I like on DVD and do things on my life list
Top 5 Ways to improve yourself in 08: pray more, work less, play more, love harder, dance or sing every day
One new years wish to make your 08 truly happy: World PEACE. *giggle* I know this is the right answer! TV tells me so!

Good Christmas, Bad Christmas: Lessons in Looking on the Bright Side
Merry Christmas everyone. I know there are only a few minutes left, so perhaps this is your last "Merry Christmas" of the season. I had a pretty good Christmas today, but you don't want to hear about my perfect life now do you? That's not entertainment! So, here's what really happened today.
1. I had to get up early. On the bright side "early" meant about 7:30. I was up late wrapping presents and playing "santa" so I was pretty darn sleepy.
2. My brother and his wife got the wrong calendar. Turns out that Walgreens SENT the wrong calendar and they were two days late when I paid thirty extra dollars to insure that wouldn't happen. On the bright side I now have a present for Jason's Grandma. *smiling*
3. All the little kids were fun and delightful today, except the one that puked a huge pile in the living room. On the bright side, it really cleared the room out and I could finally sit down. (Grandma doesn't really have room for everyone!)
4. Jason and Joey loved their gifts. I loved mine too, except the wireless router that I got so I could stop..uhm..."borrowing" internet for my laptop didn't work. On the bright side my wonderful husband talked to technical support (a guy he called "Apu"...although I doubt that was his real name) and made it work. This was that "going the extra mile" thing and it made me love him even more. *contented sigh*
5. I feel like a big, fat, roly poly dog tick about to pop. On the bright side, its been a yummy week of eating.
6. I have gained four pounds this week (no kidding) and have to weigh in on Saturday. On the bright side, I'll be SO far away from my 25 pound goal that I won't have to worry about hitting it this year.
Wait. That still sucks. Hmph.
7. We have a Wii. It makes Joey crazy to lose games to his Dad and worse yet his Mom. He screams and yells and really puts on a nice little fit. On the bright side, I can now purchase Wii Fit. I have no excuses except laziness.
8. My living room is trashed, but on the bright side I have a SERIOUSLY comfortable ottoman chair to sit in and look around at the piles of joyous holiday debris.
9. My butt is so cold that it is still a little numb. On the bright side, I've been able to make time to scrapbook in my cold, cold garage.
10. I started bleeding today. I was so disapointed I almost cried. I guess I was hoping for a holiday miracle of improbable pregnancy or something. I was a weekish late. I know. Dumb. It didn't happen. On the bright side...well...I can't really think of a bright side for this one. I think I'll just call it a night!

My Christmas is Weirder Than Yours: A Lesson from My Family
So, I've always known that I'm not really normal. I mean, I guess I'm as normal as the next not normal person, you know? Anyway, we had Christmas with my Mom and brothers today. It was nice, but weird. I only have a few minutes so I'll make an abbreviated list.
1. Starting time was three. A nice, middle of the afternoon, give me time to get stuff done this morning kind of time. We were there a little early. My mom showed up at nearly five. *rolling eyes*
2. Food. We like to eat, but for some reason the menu for today went like this: Subway subs, Pizza Hut Pizzas and fish....lots of fried fish. Hmmm. In addition there were crab puffs, veggie pizza bars (those cold kind with cream cheese), little smokies and Puppy Chow (not the puppy kind, but the kind you make in a trash bag). Weird, huh?
3. My mom showed up EARLY only to drop my youngest brother off and then make a "quick run" to town for the pizza and subs. Uh huh. She called an hour later to say that Subway won't take a check and that she left her credit card at home. Uh huh. So Jason and I go to pick up her three foot sub.
4. The three foot sub turned out to be a six foot sub with TWO trays of veggies.
5. For giggles and grins we all stood out in the cold and watched my two oldest brothers and a sister in law shoot skeets. (Google it city folks, I'm in a hurry.) Yes, our idea of entertainment in arctic weather is to stand around watching the men miss while firing at little clay disks. Weird.
6. I can't cash my Christmas present until Wednesday.
7. My mom bought me a Paula Dean cookbook and said "I heard she's really into cooking healthy." I'm not kidding. Its what she actually said to me. Paula loves to deep fry everying and cover it in buttah. LOL. Its a great book though. Weird.
8. Joey spent most of the evening in the bedroom in trouble. *sigh*
9. There were puppies there. Little beagle puppies. They were wearing clothes. One had on a festive little sweater. The other one had on a pink and black party gown with skulls on it. Weird.
10. My nephew told me that he liked the way my hands smelled. Unfortunately, the dog had just licked them. Yep...that "new puppy" smell gets them everytime.
Weird.

Lessons from My Snow Days

So, I have just enjoyed my THIRD snow day (although they have really just been "ice" days for me) in a row! So, here's a list of things I've done. I know. This build up totally makes you want to read alllllll the way down, huh? *smiling*
1. I have watched the following movies: Wanted, StepBrothers, Mamma Mia, Space Chimps, A Christmas Carol, Bad Santa, The Mummy (whatever the name of the third one is), Dirty Dancing, Deep Impact and THe Day After Tomorrow. What have I learned? Natural disasters=bad. Monkeys in space=good. Pierce Bronson singing=bad. Patrick Swayze w/o a shirt=good.
2. I baked these HEALTHY little cakes that are actually tasty. Recipe: 2 cans pumpkin (the little ones...err..normal sized ones) and a strawberry cake mix. Blend well. place in muffin tins. Cook for 30 minutes. Cool. Serve with Cool Whip. If you use Cool Whip Lite, these puppies are 2 points (or 1.5 if they are little) each! mmmmmm.
3. Gingerbread House Contruction Complete. What have I learned? That it would have been easier and probably more fun to do it myself. Joey was in protest the whole time and only did half of the roof. Jason made one ginger bread woman with jelly breasts and a ginger bread man with what probably is a hard-on. *sigh* Can't we just be normal?
4. My new chair is SERIOUSLY comfortable. I wish we had brought it home sooner!
5. There's still a little girl inside of me that is WAY excited about snow days. I thought she had died when I watched that stupid Two Girls and a Cup video.
6. The entertainment value of people pretending to be robots is truly underestimated. I was seriously bummed to learn that The Sarah Connor Chronicles is being moved from Monday nights to Friday. That is the kiss of death. :-(
7. Joey has the most amazing smile. Seriously. Although he's had some crabby times this past week, its been a pretty good time.
8. I watched a Paula Dean Special or two. How is she still alive? Could it be the butter and oil that are preserving her innards into cholesterol laden archeological organs? Hmmm. I do admire a woman who enjoys her food the way she does and really...anyone who can make a Thanksgiving dinner by FRYING everything...is a woman after my heart.

A Preacher's Wife Christmas List; A Lesson for Those Who Point Fingers
If you've read this blog for very long you know that my husband is a pastor of a small Southern Baptist Church in the Bible belt of our nation. That makes me, by default, a preacher's wife. I have blogged before about this topic. Today, my preacher's wife Christmas list. 1. Understanding.
I suppose that's just a little bit too much to ask, but there are some people in the congretation that have extremely puritan views of what my "position" should include. For example, I should be modest and demure (uhm..not so much). I should be able to make fried chicken and apple pie (chicken, yes...w/o the bone. pie is yucky. why would I make that?) I should be able to sing in the choir and play the piano (okay...check). I should be all women to all women. (I suck at this. I care for them, but am not always sure how to minister to them. I feel like an outsider.) I should be able to selflessly teach and lead everytime the church door opens. (I teach almost every time the doors open, but I need to have a time to learn and be taught. Sometimes people forget that.) So for Christmas I wish that people understood that there is not a cookie cutter preacher's wife and understand that I am human.
2. Cooperation.
This week I discovered that I am continually pissing people off because......*wait for it*.......*wait for it* I keep opening the curtains on Sunday morning. I'm not kidding. Someone told Jason last week that they VOTED on it at a business meeting and the curtains should stay closed. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? So, I was inadvertently pissing people off. Since I had already opened the curtains before I found this out yesterday morning, our evil (yes...evil) extreasure who is older than Moses and is the grumpiest most vengeful senior citizen I have EVER encountered went and closed the two curtains on "his side" of the church. *rolling eyes*
A little cooperation please.
3. Money for ministry.
The children's ministry needs some things. Literature, electronics, etc.. to be thriving and reach out to the community. That's not happening.
4. Sympathy
If you cut the preacher's pay in half (like you want!) you take $800-$1000 a month away from my family. Sure, times are hard, but the problem is a lack of faith, not a lack of funds.
5. Appreciation for my Husband
What he does, what he puts up with and how much he cares for you deserves your appreciation. He is not your slave. Just because your tithes pay his salary does not mean that he will accept YOUR opinion as fact. Show him that you care.

Lessons in Finding Someone
I am so lucky to be with my totally kick butt, sexy, smart hubby who really loves me. I am. This is not written sarcastically or with a punchline in mind. I LOVE that I am in love. I LOVE that I am in a stable relationship. I LOVE that this person I share my life with is a great conversationalist, a creative lover and a compassionate father. I LOVE that we enjoy a few of the same things, share a love of God, think the same things are funny (well...SOME of the same things!). I am thankful. Even when we fight and I pull away, I could never imagine my life, my world without him.
So, why am I singing his praises? Why am I slobbering on about what a blessing he is? I've just been thinking lately about many people that don't have someone. I don't mean are "unmarried", but who don't have that special connection with someone.
I know (and I'm not kidding) 2 women who are in their mid to upper thirties who are virgins. They are attractive, smart and fun to be around. They are unmarried, but more important than that missing wedding ring is that they don't have that person. I also know of another woman who was a virgin until her mid-3os and a man until his FORTIES! (Side note: I know a nun in her fifties that is most likely a virgin too. I'm just afraid to ask.) Why is it so hard to find someone? These people are "normal" people that just haven't found that someone and aren't willing to try on a few "Mr. Right Nows".
Are they just being too choosy? Is there baggage that's keeping them from this? These people WANT relationships (or so they say), they aren't avoiding them. Why is it so hard to find someone?
I would think that after a certain point you probably don't miss what you haven't had, but really? Is that how this kind of thing works?
Today on the way to work I listened to 7 ads for online dating services, local "event coordinators for singles" and so on. Why are they advertising? Because people want what they have to offer. They are willing to do anything to find that connection, that person. Some of my friends have even tried the online dating thing. One married her guy, the other...not so much.
Why is it so hard to find someone? Is technology an inhibitor? Do we attend fewer social events? Has the media tricked us into believing their version of happiness?
I have thought before that it would be fun to join a few of the matchmaking sites to see what they are like and what kind of people I would be matched up with. FUN! The only reason I don't? There are real people that are using this real service to find their REAL match...and I would just be a player.
Have you tried the online dating/matchmaking thing? How did it work for you? Is there just something I'm missing? Why is it so hard to find someone?

Adventures in Vomit: A Lesson From Cake Day
Yeah. I know. You can hardly wait to read this post, huh? *giggle*
Twice a week I have lunch duty. On Wednesdays I have 45 glorious minutes there. Straight. *ugh* It not a difficult duty at all. Its just boring. Except on Cake Day. Cake day happens about every two weeks or so. Its just what it sounds like. The cafeteria ladies make cake. Usually it is yellow cake with chocolate icing.
The cake is good. Really good. But Cake DAY? Well...it always seems to be a little crazy.
First of all, the K-2 group can hardly hold a fork let alone manuever it to their mouths without losing any of the cargo. Under the tables its like a cake HOLOCAUST! Crumbs. Icing. Forks thrown down indespair as they just cram the sweet yumminess in with their hands. Its messy. I feel sorry for the next group that has to sit there. Seriously.
So cake day began as normal. Cake holocaust was well under way. The PE teacher (a lunatic. and yes...I think that's the clinical term to describe her) has made up some dumb food rules that the kids are supposed to follow and poor saps like me that are only in there once or twice a week are supposed to enforce. *rolling eyes*
On Cake Day, this means that have to eat TWO things BEFORE they can eat the cake they desire. TWO other things before they can eat the yumminess they have been smelling all day. You'd think that's a good thing, but really? The other three things on the tray: spaghetti (with no salt. blech!), green beans (again...no salt, but sprinkled liberally with "Flavor-B-Gone") and 2 pieces of faux wheat bread (you know the white bread that is like tan so it makes you think you are eating healthy). TWO things? I would be happy if my kid at his piece of cake and drank his milk. At least then he would have something in him.
Anyway, on Cake Day the kids raise their hands to ask if they can eat their cake. Grrrr. This is just so dumb. So, I have to pretend to care and say things like "Take a big bite of your green beans and then you can!" or "Finish your spaghetti!". *rolling eyes* I would want to eat my cake first too. Cake Day is a high maintenance lunch. Lots of hands raised. Cake crumbs piling up at my feet. WOOO! Cake Day!
Nearly 15 minutes into the bliss of Cake Day a roar begins on the far end of the cafeteria. A student, carrying his tray to the trash, stops and vomits instead. Yep. And not just on his tray. That would have been TOO convenient. WAY too convenient. He spews on his tray, on the bench nearest him, on the floor AND on himself. WOOO! Cake Day!
This, of course, begins my panic. I have seen Stand By Me. I know that at public eating events when one person hurls, others tend to follow suit. So, the rush to get students back in their seats and to stop going "OOOO! Look what Willis did!!!!" was frantic.
Fortunately, the custodian, Super Kurt, was on the scene and quickly spread that foul smelling Vomit-B-Gone stuff all over the place. Unfortunately, that stuff is slick. I'm just saying.
After the roar from the pukey kid calmed down, a new uproar began with the next group that came in. The two worst behaved students in the group sat by each other and decided to pick each other apart for sport. It went something like this:
"She said I was retarded because I flunked 2nd Grade."
"I did not! I didn't say anything!"
"I didn't FLUNK! I was HELD BACK!"
"I didn't say anything. She started it."
"She did too. She said I was retarded."
"No, she said I was retarded."
"I didn't say anything."
*ugh*
Turns out they both were calling each other retarded. *sigh* They were both right.
WOOO! Cake Day!

WOOO! Cake Day!

My Slightly Kinky Christmas List
My Slightly Kinky Christmas List
This post is FULL of TMI, so click away now if you can’t handle that.
1. Real alone time with hubby. Alone time that lasts more than twenty minutes and happens when we are both awake and not exhausted. Seriously.
2. One of those “magic wands”. (Don’t worry. These links are work safe!)
3. A more comfortable bed and/or pillows. Okay…just new bedding all around. The playpen needs a little spiffing up. Wait…is “spiffing” even a word?
4. A grown up bedroom. I have movie posters and stacks of sci-fi books so tall, they have actually injured my pets. So, a grown up bedroom with art work, candles, NO movie posters…would be great. I love you honey, but you this is you.
5. A new bag for my…uhm…things.
6. A seriously hot dance with Queen Latifah. I know. Shut up. Just dip me in honey and throw me to the lesbians. She’s my “go gay girl”. You’ve got one, right? Right?
7. Really high heeled shoes that I can walk in…err…slinky sexily around in. *wink wink* And not the kind that light up. Those would not be sexy…they would be like adult clown shoes. *giggle*
8. Bellydancing lessons. Okay…this is kind of a non-kinky thing really, but would enjoy it!
9. A secret tattoo that means something secret. I would tell everyone that asks that it means something different! *giggle*
10. Fishnets. No good reason, I’ve just never worn them outside the 80s with leg warmers. (no, I don’t have pictures of that!)
11. The all naked, all sex weekend at a place that is not home, with the money to order every meal out, and the time to just sleep and sex and sleep and sex.

Music Teacher’s Christmas List

Music Teacher’s Christmas List
1. A fully funded music program with resources to support ALL aspects of my curriculum.
2. A choir that doesn’t freak out when they get on stage and then perform WAY below par.
3. Recognition of the fine arts as equal academic subjects.
4. Snot-proof clothing. I’m just saying.
5. An accompanist. Really. Its hard enough doing everything else. I have a tough time being adequately prepared for complicated accompanied pieces. I’m really “out of shape” as far as playing the piano goes. In college I would practice twenty to forty hours a WEEK. Now? Not so much.
6. The opportunity to teach other teachers how to incorporate the fine arts into their “regular” classrooms.
7. Technology to support my wildest education dreams.
8. More time with my students. Fifty minutes a week? Are you kidding me? I need three times that.
9. A stage with professional lighting and sound. What I have is adequate, well..not really, but we don’t know any better! LOL
10. Kleenex. Why don’t people send the music teacher Kleenex when they send it to the classrooms? I see snotty little kids too.

Lessons About the REAL Santa
So, Joey and I have had the "santa talk". You know the one. The grown up tries to be all vague and non-committal to the whole santa thing and then kid demands that you tell him the truth. He's already suspicious and his friends have been talking about it. They think they've all got it figured out.
Okay. That was last year.
This year, he's psuedo-confident that Santa isn't REALLY the one who brings him presents, but you can tell that he doesn't want to screw up his big day of loot. LOL.
I am seriously considering ordering a phone call from Santa for him. *giggle*

Crap. I Haven't Learned Yet
Okay. So now I've spent HOURS trying to re-do the blog that I mistakenly deleted. LOL. So I have this three column thing going on now. I like that. The middle section needs to be a little larger. I don't know how to do that. *sigh* If you do, feel free to leave me a comment or email me. :-)
Lessons From a Really Good Week

It's been a good week. Seriously.
I can't always say that about concert weeks. Some years they just go from bad to worse and are filled with problems. This year rehearsals went smoothly. Very few discipline problems. Things were completed in a timely manner. In fact by concert day, I was freaking out a little bit about how smoothly things were going. I was sure that this meant disaster for the concert. lol. It didn't! I wasn't exactly in love with the theme of the concert, but everything went well. Lots of compliments.
Things at home have been smooth and happy. Jason has been an amazing help around the house and really did a super job helping me with the concert. Joey was in a pretty good mood this week and enjoyed some bonding with mom time.
People that bug the crap out of me at work stayed away because it was concert week and they have obviously headed my telepathic messages of "Leave me alone!". So, that was delightful!
Friday night we put up our christmas tree. It was fun. The boys were both enthusiastic participants (I'm not sure that has ever happened.) The cats, unfortunately, were pretty enthusiastic about the whole thing too. Christmas music played in the background. It was just a great night.
Saturday was a good day to relax. We watched TV and played games. I worked on our Christmas letter and a few Christmas cards. Joey and I went to a swimming birthday party and he spent the night with Grandma which allowed us some grown up only time when I got home.
Add to that a warm night of cuddling and hot quickie sex this morning. *sigh* What a great week!

Lessons about Cancer
Tonight there was a special infomercial type thing on about St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Joey watched for a while and then asked "Why do all the diseases happen to the bald people."
A short lesson followed.

What I've Learned from Magic Numbers
So, a couple of weeks ago I had some blood work done. Oh..and I peed in a cup. I called today to get the results from the doctor and could not be more happy! I usually hate the numbers, but today...TODAY they are good!
So, the first number is what it was in January and the second number is what it is now. Bear with me, although the numbers are better they aren't perfect. But..let's focus on the good people. Let's focus on the good!
Cholesterol: 197 in January, 140 today! *clapping* YAY for fish oil tablets!!!
Triglycerides: 851 in January (I know...WTH? How is that even possible???) Today=264. Woot! Woot!
HDL: In January 30, Today 34. Okay not much of a change, but we did want this number to go UP. And it did. :-)
LDL: In January they couldn't get a reading because something was to bad to read, today the number is 53. That's good! One website even calls this "optimal". Holy crap.
Hemoglobin A1c: In January it was 10.3 which is bad. Today it is 7.1!!!! That is awesome. In fact 6.5 is "normal". And well...I've always been a bit above normal in life in general. *smiling*
I was so happy on the way home from work! I've gained weight in the last two weeks (just a couple of pounds, but still!!!!) and this really reinforced that my new eating and exercising habits are paying off in other ways that the scale can't measure.
Okay....now back to your regularly scheduled crabby, cynical blogpost...
Nope..I just can't do it. *smiling* I'm going to bed to think about my magic numbers. Okay...and the big concert is tomorrow. I'll think about that too! :-)

How NOT to Gain Weight this Holiday Season: No More Lessons Please
Stop eating.
Seriously.
LOL...okay...I'm not trying to be a Mrs. Smarty McSmartyton, but I am seriously sick of reading about how not to gain weight this month. I'm tired of hearing it on the radio. Tired of hearing about it on TV. I'm just tired of hearing about it. Is there seriously nothing else left in the world to talk about?
What? You are not sick of it yet? Well here ya go. And here. Don't forget this one. Okay...one more because its just over the top.
Now, my faithful blog reader probably knows that I'm trying to lose weight. Thanksgiving was not kind to me and this week, concert week, is not exactly going well. Stress eating. No time to cook stuff eating. and well..just eating and no exercise. So, I know what to do to GAIN weight. lol. I'm just tired of hearing about it.
The sad news? It is only December 2. I have a whole month to go before all the new years resolutions to lose weight start. *rolling eyes* Just kill me now. Pass the fruitcake.
Seriously.

Lessons from a Music Student
The Teacher Who Let Me Speak
I came to school unable to do many things
That teachers - and my folks - thought counted most.
I struggled with my math and science projects,
And reading was a hardship; writing worse.
But once a week, I met with Mr. Foster.
Then, I spoke with ease and with accomplished grace.
For the language that he spoke would touch my heartstrings,
And I relished being in such a safe place.
His lessons always had some information,
But mostly we would practice what he preached.
And with him I was gifted as my classmates
Who could read, and write, and win awards in speech.
My time with him each week was like a treasure.
He loved to teach; and I...I loved to learn.
His passion for his topic made it easy;
My success appeared to be his first concern.
He'd orchestrate a chorus of varied learners:
Some sad, some joyful; those who seemed so bright.
And the harmony that echoed from his clasroom
Enriched not just my day, but my whole life.
Mr. Foster was my music teacher.
His memory I cherish till this day.
He saw a talent others did not value,
And when I had no words, he let me play.

Taking a Year Off: Would there be a lesson?
If I could take a year off of work this is what I would do:
1. I would make supper almost every night. Real supper, not just calling out for Chinese or pizza.
2. I would volunteer at Joey's school.
3. I would take Joey to the library every week. We don't read enough. I've tried to have him read or read to him every night and I suck. I'm a bad mom. I need more time.
4. I would scrapbook. A lot.
5. I would visit my grandma more often.
6. I would work out for an hour in the morning. Well...mostly. I enjoyed my work out tonight. Its just hard to squeeze them in.
7. I would make hand-made christmas cards. I think that is just the coolest thing ever and I just don't have the time to make it happen.
8. I would declutter regularly.
9. I would attend those pastor's wives luncheons that only happen during the day.
10. I would get many things accomplished at church: organization, visitation, etc... I would be a better helpmate if there were more time in my week.
11. I would take naps. I mean seriously, why not? I like napping! I also like staying up late and if I napped, that would be easy to do.
12. I would create a BUNCH on downloads for my bulletin board site and try to make some money...real money on it. I have some great ideas, but am just not sure how to market them. This could be a great side business! :-)
13. I would expand my cafe press store.
14. I would write long, elaborate, erotic e-mails to my hubby at work.
15. I would be thankful to be able to be home and still pay the bills. Very very thankful.

Lessons from the Music Teacher

Okay, I just need to get a few things off my chest. Recently a couple of people have seriously pissed me off. Granted, it is concert week and I'm a little stressed, BUT there are some things that you "regular" people or "regular" teachers need to know.
1. Music is an academic subject. Music is specifically an applied academic. Look it up online. Find it in NCLB.
2. In 20 years students aren't going to remember your lecture on Columbus or why the Pythagorean theorem is so thrilling, but they will remember the music. What do YOU remember?
3. Music teachers have 2-10 PUBLIC REPORT CARDS every year. Think about it, how many parents come to your classroom and sit and watch you lead your students in working a math problem or diagramming a sentence? What! None? Hmmm...cause a few times a year several hundred people come to watch my students perform. I am not judged by the concepts that I have taught or the objectives met day to day. I am judged on 45 precious minutes in time that can be affected by the weather, the news, a sick kid or a faulty wire. I am "valued" by how well I entertain. I take it upon myself to make sure that my subject is taught thoroughly and well so that this performance can be a reflection of what I do.
4. "regular" classroom teachers don't understand the planning and execution of this kind of giantic event. What they DO understand is that there schedule (the one in which they get to see their kids for LONG periods of time everyday) may be slightly skewed for 4 days...and they moan and groan. To me, to others, to anyone who will listen. I don't get offers for help. I have to ask, sometimes BEG...and am met with "i guess" or "if I have to".
5. I still try to be as positive as I can to those who so "selflessly" allow their schedule to be altered so that my program will be supported on at least a functionary lesson.
6. I am a real teacher, damn it. I can't help that in college YOU chose the "grade papers all night" line and i chose the "sing and dance and make kids performers" line. What I do is just as important as what you do, regardless of what the schedule says. Refer to #2.
7. Concert week is not the time to mess with me, needlessly stress me or fill my inbox with stupid questions.
8. Its okay to tell me and the kids that you enjoyed the performance. We need to hear it.
Rant over.

Reasons Why I am Convinced that Technology Hates Me
I love technology.
No, really. I do. Despite what the title of this entry says and despite what I am about to write about, I LOVE technology. iPods, cell phones, computers, laptops, cameras, DS, Gameboy, PSP, XBox, Wii...I love technology.
I am beginning to think, however, that technology does not like me.

I am beginning to think, however, that technology does not like me.
- Every time I have used the copier upstairs in the last two weeks, it has died. E123984329482 something error, fatal paper jam, etc..
- I couldn't use my hairdryer for four days because I thought it had died. Turned out there was some safety thing on the outlet on my wall (that probably prevented my untimely death) that needed pushing.
- My laptop seems to have lost the ability to communicate via any network. It continues to send "Internet Disconnected " messages to me the entire time I look at it angrily.
- My cell phone won't stay charged. And I think its laughing at me.
- I have tried unsuccessfully for two days to pull off a document from my jump drive (or thumb drive or whatever you guys call them) at work. The doc works at home from the jump drive but I can't pull it up on ANY computer at school. Grrrrrr.
- Don't even get me started about the damn toaster. I'm just not going there.
- Its been a long day. A good day. But a long day. I'm trying to get some major school work done and part of it includes developing pictures that the choir sold at Grandparent's Day today (don't ask why we don't celebrate Grandparent's Day in September like the rest of the world). Take my jump drive (aka spawn of Satan) to Walgreens. Its close to ten o'clock. I'm in my Steven Tyler PJs with a sweatsuit jacket thrown on so I look a little less Halloween. The photo guy was convinced to print the pics for me in about ten minutes. I'm sure it was because I looked sad. There were NO pictures on the jump drive. Grrrrrr.
- I'm ready for a diversion and then sleep, but I can see the headline now "Local Pastor's Wife Electricuted While Using Vibrator". Yeah, if that doesn't kill my mom, I don't know what would.

No Lessons Here, Keep Moving...
I'm a bad blogger. I know. Its been a busy few days. Okay...Saturday wasn't so busy, but I just took the day off! :-) Tomorrow the choir performs for Grandparent's Day and then takes/sells pics, plus concert rehearsal with most classes for the big winter concert next week, plus permission slips and DVD orders and anxious soloists and broken instruments and *sigh* I'll write more soon. Just know I'm busy and with busy comes crazy and with crazy comes a brilliant blog post about Lessons found stuck under the table or Lessons in Setting the School on Fire during the candle light finale or whatever. :-)

Tired Lessons
I'm tired.
I'm tired of some of the dumb people I work with. I'm tired of making allowances for them. Am I offered the same courtesy?
I'm tired of eating the "right" way and exercising and seeing little or no results.
I'm tired of worrying about things that I probably don't need to worry about...and yet...can't stop.
I'm tired of stupid parents.
I'm tired of Christmas music.
I'm tired of fake church people.
I'm tired of not having sex every day. Shut up.
I'm tired of my current dwelling.
I'm tired no time for scrapbooking.
I'm tired of not having the connection time with Joey that I want.
I'm tired of the car I'm driving.
I'm tired of the lies. Do you think I don't know?
I'm tired of my mom's craziness. Isn't there a pill for it or something?
I'm tired of compromises.
I'm tired of an hour's drive to work.
I'm tired of being tired.
I'm tired.

I'm tired.

A Lesson in Missed Opportunity
So, you may recall, that I have a boyfriend. That's right. My husband knows...although I'm not sure my boyfriend knows. His name is Will Smith. He's a way cool musician and actor and he makes me all warm and jiggy. On the way to work I hear on the radio that he'll be in St. Louis. ST. LOUIS???? OMG! That's practically my house. Well...sort of.
I didn't know in enough time to actually get there. Joey had no place to go, I may have had to go alone (although I had three or four kids tell me today that they would have gone with me! lol)...so I missed an evening with my boyfriend just because of other responsibilities. *sigh* Maybe next time...
Here are some more posts that mention Will Smith. Just in case you are seriously bored.

Lessons in Kids TV
So, I was all about letting the TV babysit my son. It worked when I was busy. Unfortunately, I can only take kid tv for so long. When he was younger it was Barney, Barney, Barney. Now, although it was annoying, I'm a music teacher. I learned a few new songs AND some child tested dance moves. *smiling* Seriously, Barney is like crack for babies. I remember Joey around two or so being mesmerized by that big purple lug. Anyway....those were the days. So, as I sit here watching the iCarly iGo to Japan movie for the fourth time, I thought I would blog a list of Joey's favorite movies and shows that I have seen ad nauseum.
Spongebob-Okay...if I'm not watching the same one over and over, this can be amusing. Sometimes there are little jokes just for adults. Patrick annoys me. Dumb guys (or starfish) are never cool. Ever.
Drake and Josh-This one is okay too. That is when I'm not watching the same one over and over. They at least have real story lines and funny teenage-ish drama. Its clean, no bad language and occasionally you can learn something from them.
iCarly-I like this one. I'm tired of the Japan movie, but the series is fresh and entertaining. Its funny, but believable.
Drumline-This movie is one of Joey's favorites. When it first came out years ago we watched it almost everynight for weeks. LOL. I like it and Joey liking it makes my music teacher's heart swell with pride. "ONE BAND! ONE SOUND!" The downside? Any time he watches it now he goes around drumming on things for days. grrrrrrr.
Cats and Dogs-Funny movie! The first ten times. Even combating talking dogs and cats gets old after a while. If you haven't seen it, rent it today. Two thumbs up!
School of Rock-I like this movie too. It makes me wish I were a cooler teacher...or err...pretend teacher or whatever. I have even blogged Lessons from School of Rock.
The Wiggles-These guys were great, but I got bored with them FAST. Fortunately, The Wiggles only were hot for a year or two with Joey.
Bob the Builder-Holy crap. This made my brain bleed it was so dull. Thank God we only had one video tape of this for a while. I still cringe when I think about it. *cringing*
Teletubbies-So stupid. So dumb. Why on earth did we EVER watch it? But...when I saw this funny video featuring my boyfriend, Will Smith's song "Boom Shake the Room"...it made me like them a little more. LOL.
Okay...I must turn iCarly off and force the boy to bed. *smiling*

Lessons from my Aimless Wanderings Online
Did You "do it" on Election Night - Article about election night sex. Actually, I didn't do it election night...but the next morning? Four incredible times. :-D
So, How Much for the Hologram? -Look, I think it was worth WHATEVER it cost. I'm rarely, if ever excited about watching CNN, but the hologram was awesome. I wish they would use it every night. I would probably tune in.
Buh Bye to Lesbian Love, but Hello President Roslin -Grey's Anatomy: Okay, I thought Callie being hetero-sorta was fine. She is one of my "Go Gay Girls"...seriously, just too hot...oh wait...what was I saying? Oh yeah...so I totally get that the girl whirl she and doctor Hahn were having just wasn't the desired effect. Seeing Callie have sex? Hot? Snobby, no chemistry girlfriend? Boring. So...I'm fine with it. Anyway....even better knews? The chick that played President Roslin on Battlestar Galactica (seriously one of my all time favorite series!) is coming to play a doc on Grey's Anatomy. Awesome.
Fears of Dem Crackdown Boosts Gun Sales -*rolling eyes* Hey Ma! Pa! Yuns better gitcher guns before furst of da year.
Hollywood Joins Furor as Prop 8 Fails - I feel bad for them. :-( Poor Ellen. She makes me laugh.
Little House on the Prairie: Adults Only Version??? - Yeah, I didn't believe it either.
Potato Soup-1 point per cup, had this for supper. Yummo.

Reasons Why I'm Glad This Week is Over
1. Stupid dumb no-baby conversation with Jason.
2. 2 doctor's visits and a trip to the prothstetics place to get a new binder.
3. A not amazing evaluation at work earlier this week (I was so stupid to pick the worst behaved class at school!)
4. I've gained weight this week. :-( Stupid Halloween candy.
5. We haven't had much extra money this week. It will be a tight weekend too.
6. Found out that my traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas planshave been TOTALLY screwed up. I'm one for tradition and this is really upsetting me.
7. No comment.
8. My mom only talks to me when forced. :-(
9. Joey got a write-up of sorts at school this week.
10. Church business meeting only meant MORE work for me. :-(

Lessons in Feeling Broken
So, I want another baby. This has been true for several years now. In the past year I have talked about it several times. My husband has shown diminished enthusiasm for the idea. Several months ago he said that he would consider it, but really didn't want to adopt. He said that he liked the idea of trying to have a biological child. Actually said, "Well another baby wouldn't be so bad, but I'd really rather have one of my flesh."
So, today I brought up the subject because it was just the two of us, Joey was at school. It didn't go well. Although I understand that he would like to have a biological child, its not a possibility. We've been having unprotected sex for about 15 years...no baby. My OB-GYN has said that me getting pregnant is "not likely" and that even then it would be risky carrying a baby to term. I've had multiple surgeries on my abdomen in the past 4 years, a pregancy if that happened, would not be a good thing.
So, when we discuss these things he just says "well we don't KNOW" that you can't get pregnant. Are you kidding me? What the hell? Anyway, things just went downhill from there. The conversation ended with me feeling like a total failure because I have been unable to get pregnant. I have felt depressed and broken all day.
I guess I'll have no more children. I guess that Joey will be an only child. It saddens me. More than I can really write about. Know what's worse? No one else cares.

Lessons from Cranky Republicans
Dear Cranky Republicans:
I am already tired of your whining. I have been tired of your I-hate-Obama-and-You-Should-Too emails for months. You seriously, seriously need to get over this and move on. ONE NATION, under God INDIVISIBLE....you remember that right? Quit sending me e-mail, quit linking me to your cranky blog and quit blasting Christians who didn't vote for the red team. There are more of us than you think.
Love and Smooches,
Tracy
P.S. This is my last politics related post. Ever. Okay, well...for now.

Presidential Lessons

I would like to be the first to welcome our new Democratic OverLord to the White House. *smiling* YAY! *doing the happy dance and ducking as conservative Republican "friends" throw things at me* I can't wait to tell Joey when he wakes up!

A Letter to Joey before Election Day 2008
Joey:
I just want to take a minute to let you know why I'm voting tomorrow and why I have chosen to back Obama. Regardless of the outcome of the election, I want you to know that when I step into the booth to vote I am thinking about you.
I'm voting because we need a change. I know you don't completely understand this whole election thing, but your interest in the last few weeks has been exciting. Its great to talk to you about the topics that the candidates are talking about. You have voted at Nick.com and were excited to see that the candidate that you voted for won the nick.com election. You have talked to kids at school about the election and have come home with questions about taxes and jobs.
You have seen the commercials on TV that are mean and distasteful and asked why people would do that. You've witnessed first hand the hate and self-righteous idiocy that some extreme conservatives have for others that don't agree with them. You've questioned what it means to be a voting Christian. I'm so proud of you for being open to learn about democracy.
Tomorrow I'm voting for a change. I have traditionally voted Republican and have not been impressed with what is happening to our country. Tomorrow I am voting for Barak Obama to be our next president. This multicultural, bi-racial idealist is who I feel will best bring about the change that we need in America.
I worry about your future. I worry about what it will mean to grow up a bi-racial boy in this community, in this state, in this country. I worry that someday your choices will be limited and that you may have to settle instead of reaching for your dreams. I'm worried that you may get sick and that I won't be able to get you the best medical care possible. I'm concerned that you'll be forced to live in a land full of polluted water, air and no natural resources. I'm worried that you may be forced to fight in wars that have no point and no end. I'm voting tomorrow with this in mind. I'm voting for your future.
You are lucky in that you were born to two white, educated, professional adults. Apparently this makes a difference in this country. You are lucky to have parents that can afford to take you to the doctor when you need it. You are lucky to be in an amazing school that constantly tries to improve. Too many kids in this country are not as lucky as you. Something must be done.
I want you to know all of these things, because tomorrow when I vote I'm thinking of you.
love and smooches,
Mom

Angry Political Lessons
Grrrrr. Some idiotic CHILDREN'S WORKERS told my 9 year old son last night that if you voted for Obama you should be ashamed of yourself because he kills babies. *sigh* My son has been really getting into the election and really listening to things that the candidates say. This is exciting to seem him interested in anything that is not a video game. It infuriates me that these idiotic, ill-informed conservative, self righteous assholes would SHAME my son for his enthusiasm for Obama and the entire political process.
I found this out because we were watching TV and a political ad came on. Joey shyly said that he thought that maybe we should vote for McCain. I think its cute the way he lumps us all together...like he has a say in the vote. That's good, really! I'm glad he is interested. When i asked why he told me the drama from church. Jason didn't seem upset enough about it, but it did offer us an opportunity to discuss abortion and what role we think the government should have in it.
I have always and will always believe that life begins at foreplay. Its just what I think. As a woman who has been unable to get pregnant, the thought of women aborting those precious lives is a bit difficult for me to take. I, however, believe that this is my MORAL take on the issue. If I believed another way I wouldn't want the government telling me what I could or couldn't do. I think in order for me to excercise my more conservative view on this subject, I need to have a more liberal government to do so.
Honestly, I don't care who they are voting for. We don't talk politics at church. Not casually, not from the pulpit, we just don't. If they vote for McCain and are satisfied with their choice, then I'm happy for them. I voted for Bush. TWICE. I just don't feel led to do the same thing again. Its these kind of people that give Christian conservatives a bad name. They need to leave my kid alone. They want to discuss it? They should look me up. Or better yet, talk to their pastor about it. He's well informed and doesn't lose arguments. Bah.
Yes, I'm the preacher's wife. Yes, I should be ministering to them. No, I haven't called and jumped all over their lame asses, but I am very upset. This kind of HATRED of people by so called Christians makes me want to puke.

Lessons in Racism
My son is technically a biracial child. His birth mother was caucasion; his birth father was African American. His skin is a beautiful golden tan-ish color. I wish that I had skin his color. Before I have blogged about Joey learning about his heritage and questions he has asked. This week while taking a bath he asked me if he looked whiter.
"Whiter?" I asked.
"Yeah. Does my skin look whiter?"
"Well it looks a little lighter since you haven't been playing in the sun much lately."
"I just wondered when I grow up if I'm going to be black or white."
"What?"
"When I grow up, what color will I be? Will I be black or white?"
I guess it is confusing for him. I don't really ever think about it. He is so beautiful to me. So I explained that he will probably be about the same shade that he is now. He seemed content with that answer for now.
Its a strange world we live in sometime. Eventually, this sweet boy who loves riding his bike and playing video games, who tells his mom he loves her everyday and cuddles with his dad to fall asleep will be judged by racist assholes that demand him to choose a label for himself. They will demand that he declare him self "white" or "black". This precious boy will be categorized by his skin color. For some too dark to fit it, to others to light to fit in. Will they see his heart? Will they listen to his ideas?
I pray that by the time he reaches adulthood it won't even be an issue. It really is time for a change.

Lessons from an UNbusy Afternoon
It has been awhile, so here is a mindless Get to Know You:
Where is the person you gave your heart to for the first time?
Sitting in a chair next to me basking in the warm afterglow of afternoon lovin’.
What were you doing at ten last night ?
Sleeping. Its been a busy week.
What was the last thing you drank ?

The incompetencies of others.
Who was the last person to make you cry?
I just spontaneously burst into tears some times…I think the last time while was listening to the radio. Dumb radio.
Anybody you' re looking forward to seeing soon?
I’m going to Joey’s Halloween party. I’m looking forward to that.
Are you going anywhere for the next summer?
Hopefully I’m not going to work summer school and perhaps a short vacation somewhere sunny.

Jason
Who was the last person in your room?
Jason. And he’s still here!
Did you have a dream last night ?
Nope. Solid night of snoring. Thank you.

My ears. I just can’t go through with the nipple piercing. It takes MONTHS to heal!
Have any tattoos?
Nope, but I do have a permanent marker smudge on my arm.
Are you good at giving directions ?
Sure, as long as you understand the “code”. “low hand” means “left” and “high hand” means right. It a piano thing. I’m the only grown up I know that still has issues with left and right.

When I heard they were cancelling King of the Hill.
What is your favorite thing to eat with peanut butter?

I guess we’ll see! *crossing fingers*

Have you lost friends in the past 3 years ?
Maybe.
Do you talk about your feelings or hide them?
Have you read my blog? Uhm…its all I write about! Feelings, sex and stupid people.
Do you think someone is thinking about you right now?
They are.
Are you excited for anything to happen in the next 6 months?
I’m excited to think about my weight loss continuing. I’m excited to have a few weeks off.
What should you be doing right now?
Have nothing to do for about thirty minutes so this whole social networking is perfectly timed.
Do you believe in true love?
Yes
Do you miss your past?
Nope. Do you miss my past?
Do you think that your ex still likes you?
My ex what? I can’t even imagine that this would ever matter ever.

Doubt it. Gross. Although I have shared drinks with strange people that I knew…hmmm…let me think about this one
Can you easily tell if someone is fake?
Often, but it just creeps people out to tell them you intuitively know things about them. It is NOT what popular girls do!
Looking back did you ever waste too much time on a certain boy or girl?

Weird and Gross: Lessons that No One Will Want to Read Twice
So, I'm stuck at parent/teacher conferences. I am totally bored out of my mind, but don't have enough time to start a project or anything. No one visits me. :-( So, I'm going to tell you about some gross things in my life. Click away now. I'm warning you.
1. Today I watched a kid sneeze into his hands. That's good. Catch the germs, don't spread them! *clapping* Yay! THEN...THEN he took his hands and wiped them on his pants. That wouldn't have been so bad except that it was...uhm...obviously....uh..productive sneeze. I actually saw it bending and waving in the wind as he lifted his hands. He shook his head like a dog might when it stands up and just went on about his day. Uhm...gross.
2. It has finally happened. I finally pooped so much that I clogged the toilet. I know. Gross. Here's the thing. I poop a lot. Like three times a day and one of those times is almost always so much it is above the water line. Yep. I am literally full of shit. It's true. And now...now I have finally clogged the toilet. Its weird, but I have a healthy colon! :-D
3. Those baby trading stocks commercials were realllllly cute. Well, until that one where he throws up. That was gross.
whoops...out of time. I can finally leave. Sorry this list of gross was so short. :-)

Busy Lessons
I am a busy girl this week. Joey's parent/teacher conferences at which I play the role of "parent". My parent/teacher conferences at which I play the role of "teacher" or "teacher who sits alone because nobody comes to see the MUSIC teacher teacher".
I have created the school newsletter. Twice. This time sucking monster was FINISHED on Sunday night with Satan sent a "Fatal File Error". I wasn't worried at first. I've had plenty of crash and burn computer experiences. I saved the file every time I added about half a page....just habit. Well...this time there was no "previously saved version". It was GONE. The entire file was gone. Deleted? I mean...WTH? NOTHING? I'd been saving and working on it for days. Grrrrr. So, this has sucked up quite a bit of time.
Church Fish Fry this weekend. That took most all of Saturday. I ate a great deal of fried food. *sigh* I'm tired of dieting. It makes those events much less fun! Or at least it makes the guilt after wards not so fun. The event, however, went very well. It was fun being in the chilly sunshine and hanging out.
I've been fighting off the evil warlord I will call "head cold" too. I think I might be pulling ahead of this one. Maybe. :-)

Tracy Ponders Politics-Lessons for People Who Want to be Like Me
I have nothing better to blog about so I'm going to tackle some tough political issues...and by tackle I mean moan and whiney and poke fun at. :-)
Education-
No Child Left Behind was a great idealistic goal. All teachers knew then what we all still know now...it is IMPOSSIBLE for all students to work at grade level. Consider special learners? Students with mental and emotional handicaps? They will learn, but being at an appropriate grade level for their age isn't going to happen. NCLB needs to be reworked. Early childhood programs need to be buffed up, graduation exit exams would also be a good idea.
The good part about NCLB is that is totally freaked school administrators out and they started throwing money at the problem. Without fear, there would be no change. We would be doing what we have always done. So, this "motivation" was good, but still NCLB needs to be reworked.
Teachers need to be paid more. Joe the Plumber makes more than me. By a LOT.
War in Iraq
I thought it was a good idea when this all started a long time ago, but since then I think mistakes were made. We need a slow, but intentional withdrawn. Yesterday.
Global Warming
I'm not green. In fact, I'm so not green I am almost brown. That being said, I do like to watch the green channel and I frequent the blogs of a few tree huggers. I applaud their efforts and hope that someday I can be at least light green. So, I don't have much to say about the politics of global warming and such. lol.
Health Care
Health insurance sucks. I've had plenty of surgeries and tons of doctor visits and I will never be finished paying for it and I had insurance! It is so expensive to insure my hubby and son that we can't do it. We take chances instead. I find the idea of a national health insurance interesting, but I'm not sure if completely understand how it would work. I think McCain's plan of the $5000 or whatever is stupid. I spend more than that on just myself each year.
Gay Marriage
I think it is ridiculous that the government should decided who you can marry...regardless of gender. Next, will there be restrictions on who you can love? Bans on people with different skin tones marrying? Let your choices be made by your religious convictions, but the government should be WIDE open on this issue. (and no, this has nothing to do with my not so secret crush on Queen Latifah). *smiling*
Economy
I need tax relief. People I know need jobs. Small business owners and middle class working families need help. I don't know how to do this, but I know that it needs done.
Palin
She makes me sad for women politicians everywhere. This is not the leadership we were hoping for. I think if Tina Fey were running for VP I just might consider voting for McCain. *giggle*
Biden
Come on, he needs a scandal. Its been tooooo quiet about him. Let's see what we can dig up!
SNL
I must admit I have watched in more in the last month than in the last five years! LOL. So, they should definitely keep it up. Hopefully they can roll with this after the election and keep the funny stuff coming. I do, however *yawn*, wish it came on earlier here. I'm a sleepy old lady. :-D Even on Saturday.

Whining Lesson...okay...no Lesson, all whine
Here's a Big Whiney List of Dumb Stuff Going on Right Now
1. My school is full of a bunch of racist losers.
Example A: Students in 6th grade decorated their door for Red Ribbon Week with Mr. T saying "I pity the fool that doesn't stay drug free." LOL. Under it says "I'm Mr. T and I approved this message." FUNNY! Other students keeps asking "Why is there a black person on your door?" Like it is a fate worse than death or something.
Example B: A staff member was telling me about this funny e-mail she got from a friend that asked the question do you know what CHANGE stands for? Her reply? "Come Help A N*gg*r Get Elected" When I didn't laugh and said "OMG! That's awful!" She changed her demeanor and quickly agreed with me pointing out how religious the person was that sent it to her and how she couldn't believe it either.
Puh-lease.
2. My throat hurts. I think I'm getting a cold. I hate being sick. Ten vitamin C cough drops equals 1 Weight Watchers Point. bah.
3. Speaking of Weight Watchers, I'm bleeding this week which means that I've gained weight (apparently I always do this, I've just never noticed). That means tomorrow I won't lose any weight at my weigh in. Maybe I'll just sleep through it.
4. People keep annoying the crap out of me with extra little things to do...things to type, pictures to develop online, websites to find...hello? You are a grown up, you don't need me to do these things for you!
5. My music room has a new cooling/heating system. All day long it has been blowing cold air, stopping, blowing hot air, stopping, blowing cold, blowing hot...you get the idea. Is that the way the "new technology" is supposed to work?
6. Tomorrow there's a fish fry at our church. I don't feel like be sociable. There's been quite a bit of drama there this week as our demonic EX-treasurer is trying to sabotage the church finances and upset the church body. Is it wrong to hope that he gets hit by a trash truck or something this week? So, tomorrow should be interesting. At least I hope. If there isn't any drama, its going to be reeeeeeeally boring. LOL.
7. Crap...out of time.

Before and Soon to be After Photo Lessons
On the right, me. About 5 years ago. I know. Tie dye is TOTALLY back.
On the left, me. About a month ago. 110ish pounds lighter.
You can tell right?
I still have a long weigh to go. *giggle* But sometimes its good to see where you've been.
Hopeful Lessons
"True strength lies in submission which permits one to dedicate his life, through devotion, to something beyond himself. ”
- Henry Miller (1891-1980)author, writer
Sometimes I wonder if my walk with God...or at least the stumbling path that I follow with God isn't more of a harm to his work than a help. I wonder if people look at my pettiness and wonder if my God is petty. Do they look at my insecurities and think that he's not real? If he were, why would I be insecure? Do they hear my jealousy and anger and wonder if God could really work through someone like me? Do they see my unhappiness and think that God has afflicted me? Do they know that I'm praying for them and consider it just as useful as rubbing a lucky rabbit's foot?
I hope not, but honestly...I just don't know.
I hope that when they see me they will see what Jesus can do with a worthless life.
I hope that when they feel my love they know that its God who loved them first and God who loves through me.
I hope that when they hear my confessions that they will know that God fixes hearts, mends broken spirits and makes people new.
I hope that when they see any good at all in me that it points them to the Father.
I hope, but honestly...I just don't know.

Lessons from Day of the Dumb

It wasn't its REAL name, but just the unofficial name that I call yesterday. See, I work in a K-8 school district. Yesterday was MAP reward day. No, that's not when we all get maps as a reward, its a reward day for our state testing stuff. So, most of the lower grade students and about half of the upper grade students got to go on a special field trip. If they earned "proficient" or "advanced" on just one of their tests, they could go. Now think about that. All the dumb kids were left as school.
I don't mean to be insulting and as a professional educator, of course I am sensitive to the needs of all learners. If you want to hear someone wax on poetically about the joys of teaching today...click away now. Although you'll read some funny things here, they aren't exactly shining examples from the world of education.
So, the dumb kids were left at school. I have lunch duty on Fridays. Its a glorious time of watching kids eat and trying not to pass out from the nauseating stench of ravioli. Today, only about 12-14 4th grade kids were there because all the smart enough kids were on a field trip. So, I sat down at the table with them. I didn't have to. Usually I just walk around the table like a warden telling them how many minutes they have left and reminding them to shut up and eat. Today, however, I had a momentary lapse of judgement and sat down.
This obviously singled to the kids that I wanted them to talk to me.
So, the first kid. Probably the dimmest of the dim, starts talking to me. Poor kid has a speech issue and it is VERY difficult to understand. The kids in his class usually have to interpret for me. (It's AMAZING how they can understand.) So...this kid says "Mithus Keeng".
"Yes."
"Huv you eder eaden ad dat cheyedeez redurunt in sunt loo iz?"
"Uh, what honey?"
Repeated it verbatim, which did not help me out much.
Finally another student, interpreted it to mean "Have you ever eaten at that Chinese restaraunt in St. Louis?
So I innocently asked WHICH Chinese restaraunt.
*I'm going to write intelligebly for the kid eventhough he didn't speak that way.*
"The CHINESE one."
"Uhm...there are hundreds of Chinese restaraunts in St. Louis."
"You know, the one I go to."
I stare blankly at him. Refusing to comment. Knowing that if I say anything he will just keep trying to convince me that I know THE place he's been to.
"I've been to many Chinese restaraunts in St. Louis so I'm sure I've been there."
"Oh. OKay, well don't go there on Halloween."
Again. I stare blankly at him. He just smiles back and goes back to his lunch.
I sit there staring at what is left of my microwaved General Tso's Chicken, cursing myself for having unintentionally starting that round of stupidness by sitting down with a lunch that was different than theirs.
Not more than two minutes later another kid says "Mrs. King, my cat doesn't have teeth.
I ask, "How does it eat?"
The kid, looking at me like I'M the retarded one says "Uh...with his mouth."
Okay. I just get up and walk away. Its really just too much. My lunch was soiled with stupidity.
Its not uncommon. Last week I had 8th graders tell me that they didn't want Obama to win because if so he would probably reverse the slavery thing and all us white people would be slaves. I started the next lecture with "Oh my god! Do you even understand how America works? You are studying the U.S. constitution RIGHT NOW in class and you can actually think that is a possibility???" Then, the kid next to him says..."Yeah...I bet that would happen to. I hope my dad votes for McCain."
America's future. It seems a little dimmer than it did before you started reading this, huh?
